Driving Tips

  • Urban speed limit 50 km/h (31 mph), rural roads 90 km/h (56 mph), motorways 120 km/h (75 mph). Fines are high.
  • Many motorways use electronic tolls (portagens electrónicas). A rental with a Via Verde transponder pays automatically. Without it, you must pay at a CTT post office within five days.
  • Alcohol limit is 0.05%. Police conduct roadside breath tests.
  • Streets in the historic center are narrow and steep. Park outside and use metro or bus.
  • Roundabout rule: traffic already inside has priority. Signal before you exit.
  • Overnight street parking is not allowed in central Porto between 00:00 and 07:00. Use official RV areas.
