How to save?
- Compare pickup spots in Windhoek. Airport is convenient but often pricier. If you’re overnighting in town, collect in the city centre for more choice and sometimes lower rates.
- Avoid after-hours fees at WDH. Counters close around 10 pm and after-hours pickup can cost NAD 500-800. Plan pickup in normal hours or arrange a morning shuttle from an off-airport depot.
- Time your booking to the season. For June–September peak, book 3–6 months ahead. In November–March, compare closer to your dates as last-minute deals are common.
- Watch the kilometres. Namibia’s drives are long. Choose unlimited mileage or enough daily km to cover routes like Windhoek–Sossusvlei or Swakopmund–Etosha to avoid overage fees.
- Right-size the car and extras. Pick the smallest vehicle that fits your route and luggage, and skip add-ons you won’t use, like camping kits, to cut daily rate and fuel costs.
- Know cross-border costs. A cross-border letter is about NAD 500 plus border fees. If your trip is Namibia-only, keeping the car in-country avoids those charges.

What type of vehicle do I need for Namibia?
If you stick to the main tourist routes that have some gravel roads, a high-clearance SUV will be fine. For remote areas, deep sand or off-grid travel, you'll often need a proper 4x4 that has low-range gears. Most tourists rent the Toyota Hilux 4x4 when they explore beyond the main highways.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
Yes, the law says you need an International Driving Permit if your license isn't in English. Even if your license is in English, it’s a good idea to have an IDP because the police might ask to see it at checkpoints.
What insurance should I take?
Your basic rental fee usually includes standard insurance that has an excess (deductible). The rental company may offer you options like a Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) to lower the deductible, which is a good idea for gravel road travel. They sometimes offer you tire and windshield cover too, as you can easily damage these on gravel roads.
What is the typical security deposit?
For a sedan that has basic insurance, you can expect to pay about NAD 3,000-5,000 (USD 200-350). For a 4x4, the deposit can be higher, around NAD 15,000 or more if you don't take extra cover. Most companies will ask you for a credit card (not a debit card) to pay the deposit.
Can I take my rental car to neighboring countries?
Yes, most rental companies will let you drive to South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe if you arrange it with them beforehand. You'll need to get a cross-border letter from the rental company, which costs about NAD 500. You will also pay extra fees when you cross the border. They usually won't let you drive to Angola.
Is unlimited mileage included?
You should check your rental agreement. Most international brands give you unlimited mileage. Some local companies offer a daily limit of about 200-250 kilometers (124-155 miles) for shorter rentals (1-7 days) and unlimited kilometers for longer ones.
What should I do in case of a breakdown?
You should call your rental company right away on their emergency number. Most companies have a 24-hour helpline. If you're in a remote area and your phone has no signal, you should wait for another car to pass. Other tourists will often stop to help. Always make sure you have water, food and emergency supplies when you travel in remote areas.
