Driving Information

Rural speed limit is 100 km/h (62 mph); many winding sections have lower limits of 60–80 km/h.
Roads are not fenced, so wallabies and wombats cross frequently after dark. Drive slowly at night.
Fuel stations are limited on the East Coast and in the West Coast Range. Refuel when your tank reaches half full.
Mobile phone coverage is weak outside major towns. Download offline maps before traveling.
The main island has no toll roads. Only the Spirit of Tasmania ferry requires advance booking for vehicle spaces. Note: campervan rentals are usually not allowed to be taken onto the ferry.
Some gravel roads inside national parks do not allow vehicles longer than 7 m (23 ft). Check park information before entering. The RV rental company contract may also impose restrictions.
"Self-contained vehicle" means having an onboard toilet and gray-water storage. This is required for many free camping areas.

Important Information for Travelers

Purchase a Tasmanian Parks Pass. Rangers check this at most walking trails and campgrounds.
Mountain roads may require snow chains from June to September. Rental companies can provide these on request.
Total fire bans happen often in summer. Use gas stoves only in permitted areas during these times.
Dial 000 for police, fire or ambulance emergency services. Blue "H" signs show directions to hospitals.
Store all food inside your motorhome. Possums will damage bags or tents left outside.
Tap water in towns is safe to drink. Water taps in parks may not be treated, so boil or filter this water before drinking.

While most RV rental companies aren't located directly at Australian airports, their depots are usually nearby, within 2 to 30 kilometers.

What kind of license do I need to rent a campervan in Australia?
