Plan your camper trip through Finland – find your ideal camper in minutes

Road Genius compares campervan and motorhome rentals across Finland so you can choose the size, layout and insurance option that suits your trip. Most visitors collect vehicles in Helsinki, Turku or Rovaniemi and then explore Lakeland, Lapland or the Baltic coast. Note that summer brings midnight sun in the north while winter offers northern lights and sub-zero roads, so plan dates and equipment carefully.

Driving Rules

• Keep low-beam headlights on at all times; this is mandatory year-round.
• Speed limits are 50 km/h (31 mph) in towns, 80 km/h (50 mph) on rural roads and 100–120 km/h (62–75 mph) on highways in summer; limits drop by 20 km/h in winter.
• Winter tires are required 1 November to 31 March; studded tires are legal and common in the north.
• Blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%. Police conduct random roadside tests.
• Watch for moose and reindeer, especially at dusk on highways E75, E8 and roads 4, 21.
• Finland has no road tolls, but many routes include short free ferries that run on schedule.
• Card payment is standard at fuel pumps; some rural stations are unmanned after 21:00.
• Mobile phone coverage is good but can drop in remote Lapland valleys; download offline maps.

Practical Tips

• Mosquitoes are intense from late June to early August south of the Arctic Circle; bring netting and repellent.
• Use Arctic-grade diesel (Talvi Diesel) in winter to prevent fuel problems below -20°C (-4°F).
• Tire chains are legal but rarely needed; studded winter tires handle most ice.
• Park overnight only where signs permit; many towns ban street parking between 02:00 and 06:00.
• Emergency number for police, ambulance and fire is 112; operators speak Finnish, Swedish and English.
• Empty gray and black water only at marked "Kemsan Tyhjennyspiste" (chemical toilet point); fines apply for illegal dumping.
