Driving in the Area

  • Old town streets are inside the ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato), which is controlled by cameras. Only vehicles with permission may enter 07:00–20:00 on weekdays.
  • City speed limit is 50 km/h | 31 mph. On regional roads the limit is 90 km/h | 56 mph and on highways it is 130 km/h | 81 mph.
  • Highways are tolled: take a ticket when you enter and pay with cash or card when you exit. International visitors cannot use Telepass unless the rental company provides the device.
  • Height clearance in old streets can be less than 3 m | 9 ft 10 in. Park outside the city center and use public buses.
  • From 15 November to 15 April, mountain roads may require snow chains or winter tires. Police do spot checks.
  • Fuel stations often close 12:30–15:00. Self-service pumps stay open but require chip-and-PIN or contactless cards.

Practical Tips

  • ZTL fines are sent by mail through the rental company months later. Make sure rental staff register your license plate for any temporary permit.
  • Vehicle interiors can reach 35 °C | 95 °F in summer. Use windshield sun shades and park in shade when possible.
  • Winter fog can reduce visibility to less than 100 m on the Po Valley plains. Turn on fog lights and drive slowly.
  • Tap water is safe to drink. Water fountains marked "Acqua Potabile" are common in parks.
  • Emergency number for Italy is 112 for police, medical and fire services.
  • Many shops close on Sunday and during midday hours, so buy food supplies before heading into the Apennine hills.
