Driving Notes

  • Most motorways use electronic toll booths. Take a paper ticket when you enter and pay when you exit.
  • Speed limits: 130 km/h / 81 mph on motorways, 90 km/h / 56 mph on main rural roads, 50 km/h / 31 mph in built-up areas.
  • Milan has two restricted zones: Area C (inner ring, congestion charge Monday–Friday 07:30-19:30) and Area B (wider low-emission zone, no fee but cameras check vehicle emissions). Large campervans or older diesel vehicles may be banned from Area B.
  • Winter tires or chains are required on Lombardy highways 15 November to 15 April.
  • Covered parking lots near metro stations allow high-roof vans up to 3.0 m / 9 ft 10 in height.
  • LPG fuel stations are common along A1 and A4 motorways. You cannot fill LPG yourself—staff must fill the tank for you.

  • Dedicated RV service points at Quinto Romano (west ring) and Cascina Gobbà (east ring) handle gray-water and black-water emptying for a small coin fee.

Did You Know?

  • Check daily traffic bulletins in summer—red or black warning days mean holiday traffic jams on A4 and A1 motorways.
  • Heavy fog often reduces visibility below 70 m / 230 ft in winter. Motorways display a 50 km/h speed advisory warning.
  • Fines for entering Area C without paying arrive by post. You can pay the €5 ticket at newsstands or online until midnight of the next day.
  • Milan uses the single European emergency number 112 for police, fire and ambulance.
  • Free overnight street parking is rare. Look for blue-lined pay parking spaces. Some districts ban motorhome parking between 02:00-06:00.
  • Wild camping is illegal in Lombardy's regional parks. Rangers can issue immediate fines.
