Road Genius compares campervan rentals across the Netherlands so travelers can pick the best vehicle, price and pick-up spot. Amsterdam is the main gateway, with Schiphol Airport only 20 km from the city ring road (A10). The country is compact, so one-way routes to Rotterdam, Utrecht or even Germany are popular. Weather stays mild, but plan around rain and low-emission rules.

Driving Notes

  • The national speed limit for RVs under 3.5 tonnes is 100 km/h (62 mph) on motorways between 06:00 and 19:00 and 120–130 km/h at night.

  • Amsterdam has a milieuzone (low-emission zone). Diesel engines registered before 2009 are not allowed inside the A10 ring road.

  • Street parking is expensive and monitored. Overnight sleeping on public streets is illegal between 21:00 and 09:00.

  • Use Park+Ride sites around the ring road (Sloterdijk, Zeeburg) if you need day parking for vehicles over 2.1 m height.

  • The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 per mille.

  • Roads along canals are narrow. Watch for height signs on arched bridges, some are under 2.8 m (9 ft 2 in).

  • Most fuel stations sell diesel and LPG (labeled Autogas). Pay by card. There is no national toll system.

  • Buy a disposable "Dagkaart" travel pass when using public transport from a Park+Ride location. Ticket inspectors check tickets often.

  • Cyclists have priority at many junctions. Check mirrors carefully before turning right.

  • Call 112 for any emergency. English is widely spoken by operators.

  • In winter, gritting salt can corrode vehicle underbodies. Use wash bays on the A10 ring road after snow periods.

  • The nearest 24 hour hospital with accident care is OLVG Oost, 6 km from the city center.
