Driving in the Area

  • Headlights must stay on 24 hours a day in Norway.

  • Standard rural speed limit is 80 km/h (50 mph) unless signs show otherwise.

  • Several toll tunnels ring Bergen; visitors pay through the AutoPASS Visitor's Payment system or receive an invoice by mail.

  • Expect narrow fjord roads with frequent pull-off areas. Use them to let faster traffic pass.

  • Winter tires with at least 3 mm tread are required in western Norway from 1 Nov to the Monday after Easter; studded tires are allowed and useful.

  • Ferries on E39 and RV13 act like floating bridges. Pay by license plate or buy a Ferry Card for a discount.

  • Maximum permitted blood-alcohol level is 0.02 %. Penalties are severe.

  • The longest tunnel near Bergen, E16 Arnanipa, is about 7 km (4.3 mi).

Resupplying Options

  • Circle K and Shell stations on E39/E16 offer diesel, LPG and water taps; some have waste-water dumps.
  • Coop Extra, Kiwi and Rema 1000 supermarkets around Nesttun and Åsane stock fresh food and camping gas canisters.
  • Free public dump point at Bergen RV Service, Mjåtveit (open April–October).

Practical Tips

  • Bergen averages 250 rain days a year. Pack waterproof gear and park on hard ground to avoid getting stuck.

  • Sudden fog forms around fjords. Slow down and use fog lights if available.

  • Many city streets ban overnight parking for motorhomes from 23:00 to 06:00. Watch for signs marked "Forbudt å overnatte".

  • Emergency numbers: 112 police, 113 ambulance, 110 fire.

  • Tap water is safe to drink; refill tanks at campsites or taps marked "Drikkevann".
  • Mobile coverage is strong, but mountain valleys can drop to 3G. Download offline maps before leaving the city.
