Plan your camper trip from Oslo – find your ideal camper in minutes

Road Genius compares campervan rentals from many local and international suppliers so you can choose the right vehicle for your Norway road trip. Oslo is the main entry point, with Gardermoen Airport 50 km north of the city and ferries arriving at Oslo, Larvik and Kristiansand. The E6 (north–south) and E18 (west–east) are the two main highways that start from the capital and lead to fjord country, the Arctic and Sweden. Remember that Norway's "allemannsretten" right-to-roam law applies mainly to tents. Motorized camping must follow roadside parking rules or use private campsites.

Driving in the Area

  • City and ring-road speed limits are 30–50 km/h (19–31 mph). Main highways allow 80–110 km/h (50–68 mph).
  • Norway uses AutoPASS automatic toll system. Rental companies add the toll charges to your bill.
  • Winter tires with at least 3 mm tread depth are required from 1 November to first Monday after Easter. Carry snow chains if you plan to drive on mountain routes.
  • Oslo charges a daily fee for vehicles with studded tires. Pay at parking machines or through the EasyPark mobile app.
  • Campervans longer than 8 m (26 ft) may have difficulty with tight turns on city streets and smaller ferry ramps. Plan your routes and book longer ferries in advance.
  • LPG (propane) uses the Euro-coupling connection. Adapters are available at larger fuel stations.

Resupplying Options

  • Circle K and YX fuel stations on E6/E18 provide 24-hour fuel, LPG and water taps (look for "Vannfylling").
  • Public waste disposal point at Bærum treatment plant (RV168) handles gray and black water for free from May to October.
  • Supermarkets Rema 1000 and Kiwi stay open until 22:00. Alcohol above 4.7 % can only be purchased at Vinmonopolet stores.

Practical Tips

  • Call 112 (police), 110 (fire), 113 (ambulance) for emergencies.
  • Avoid overnight parking on city streets. Inside Ring 2 there is a parking ban from 00:00–06:00, and fines are expensive.
  • Days are very long in midsummer, so bring window shades. In December daylight is only about 6 hours.
  • Mosquitoes can be very dense near lakes from June to August. Keep window screens closed.
  • Many small ferries and tunnels do not allow LPG tanks that are not factory-mounted. Check warning signs before entry.
  • Keep a credit card or contactless payment ready for self-service fuel pumps, especially after 22:00.
