Driving Notes

• Most toll roads and fjord ferries use the AutoPASS electronic system. Rental plates are read automatically and you receive the bill later.
• National speed limits are 50 km/h (31 mph) in towns, 80–90 km/h (50–56 mph) on rural roads and up to 110 km/h (68 mph) on some motorways. Fines for speeding are very high.
• Norwegian law sets the blood-alcohol limit at 0.02%. We recommend zero alcohol if you drive.
• Winter tires with at least 3 mm tread are required in snowy conditions. Chains are recommended on mountain routes such as Rv 70 toward Sunndal.
• Many tunnels are longer than 3 km (1.9 mi) and some are steep. Turn on lights and keep your speed steady.
• In Trondheim center, paid parking usually applies 08:00–20:00 Monday–Saturday. Overnight street parking is allowed only where signs show a blue P without time limits.
• Expect short ferry crossings when exploring coastal areas. Arrive 15–30 minutes early in high season.
