Driving in the Area

  • Motorways have 120 km/h (75 mph) speed limits. Rural two-lane roads have 90 km/h (55 mph) limits.
  • The AP-7 is a toll road that runs parallel to the free A-7 motorway. Pay by card at toll booths or use the Telepeaje electronic tag if your rental vehicle has one.
  • City center streets are narrow. Avoid driving into old town areas and park at suburban park-and-ride lots that connect to bus services.
  • Blue curb markings indicate Zona Azul paid parking areas. Parking meters operate 09:00-14:00 and 17:00-20:00 on weekdays. Parking is free overnight.
  • Fuel stations are common on the coast but rare in mountain villages. Keep your fuel tank above half full before driving inland.
  • Low-emission zones may expand along the coast. Keep vehicle registration documents with you in case police check compliance.

Fuel, Water, Waste

  • Repsol and Cepsa service stations on the A-7 motorway offer 24-hour diesel, drinking water taps and gray water and black water disposal facilities.
  • The municipal waste facility "Punto Limpio" in Guadalhorce industrial area has a drive-through waste disposal point. It is closed on Sundays.
  • Most commercial campsites provide hose adapters. Spanish water taps often use M24 thread connections, so bring a universal connector.

Important Information

  • Wild camping within 200 meters of the coast or in protected parks can result in fines up to €200.
  • From June to September, forest fire risk is very high. Charcoal barbecues are prohibited outside designated areas.
  • Strong Levante or Poniente winds can reach speeds above 50 km/h (30 mph). Pull in awnings and secure roof boxes when winds are strong.
  • Call 112 for any emergency. Operators can communicate in English, French or German.
  • If you plan to visit Sierra Nevada ski area (2-hour drive), snow chains or winter tires may be required above 1,700 meters (5,600 feet).
