Driving Requirements

Buy the CHF 40 motorway vignette before using any Swiss motorway and place it on the windshield.
Speed limits: city areas 50 km/h (31 mph), rural roads 80 km/h (50 mph), motorways 120 km/h (75 mph) unless signs show different limits.
Headlights must stay on all day even in clear weather.
Parking zones: blue zones allow 90 minutes with a free time disc, white zones are pay-and-display, yellow zones are private and forbidden.
Overnight street parking is not allowed 22:00–06:00 in most areas; use an official camping area.
The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%; police checks are frequent.

Important Information

Dial 112 for any emergency; 117 connects to police directly.
Strong local wind called "bise" can drop temperatures quickly even in July; secure awnings and close windows when it increases.
Wild camping is not allowed in Geneva Canton; fines can reach CHF 500.
Carry snow chains from November to March if you plan mountain day trips; use them where signs show a white wheel symbol with chains on blue background.
Supermarkets close by 19:00 on weekdays and stay closed most of Sunday; buy supplies early.
Sort waste at public recycling points; putting wrong trash in bins can result in immediate fines.
