Driving Tips

  • The Swiss highway speed limit is 120 km/h (75 mph) unless signs show different limits.
  • You need a CHF 40 highway vignette before driving on any highway. Buy at the border, post offices or fuel stations and stick it on the windshield.
  • In towns the limit is 50 km/h (31 mph) and 30 km/h (19 mph) in many residential areas.
  • Winter tires are not required by law but police can fine you if you block traffic without them. Some mountain roads require snow chains when signs indicate this.
  • Zurich has many blue-zone parking areas. Display a free parking disc to show arrival time and move your vehicle after one hour (Monday to Saturday 08:00–19:00).
  • Fuel stations on highways are open 24 hours and accept credit cards, but smaller rural stations can be unmanned at night.
  • Headlights must stay on at all times, even during the day.

  • Quiet hours at most Swiss campsites are 22:00–07:00. Security may ask you to turn off engines during these times.
  • You must separate garbage. Standard bags need a local tax sticker called "Gebührensack" sold in supermarkets.

  • Wild animals like deer and foxes are active at dawn. Drive slowly on forest roads to avoid accidents.
