Driving Tips

  • 20 mph / 32 km/h is the speed limit on many city center streets. Cameras enforce this limit.
  • Edinburgh's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) started 1 June 2024. Diesel engines below Euro 6 standard face a £60 fine each day they enter the zone.
  • Car parks in the city center have height barriers around 2.1 m / 6 ft 11 in. Use Park & Ride sites at Ingliston, Hermiston or Sheriffhall for tall vehicles.
  • Controlled Parking Zones charge fees until 18:30 Monday to Saturday. Overnight camping on city streets is not allowed within the City Bypass (A720).
  • Scotland's drink-drive limit is 0.05% BAC (50 mg/100 ml). This is lower than England's limit.
  • Expect narrow single-track roads in the Pentland Hills. Use passing places and give way to uphill traffic.
  • The Queensferry Crossing (M90) is toll-free. The M6 Toll on routes south accepts contactless cards and cash.
