Driving Notes

  • The general interstate speed limit is 65 mph / 105 km/h unless signs show otherwise.
  • All New York State Thruway and most bridges use cashless tolling. Cameras bill the license plate or an E-ZPass transponder. Ask your rental company how tolls are handled.
  • Many parkways (roads like Taconic, Hutchinson River, Southern State) have bridges under 10 ft / 3 m. These roads are for cars only. Take the parallel interstate instead.
  • Overnight sleeping in vehicles is illegal in New York City and most areas near the city. Use a campground or RV park.
  • Winter storms can close mountain roads. Check 511NY for current conditions.
  • Firewood may not be moved more than 50 mi / 80 km within the state. Buy it locally.

Resupply Options

  • New York State Thruway service areas offer 24 hour fuel. Plattekill and Chittenango plazas have drinking water and dump stations.
  • Love's and Pilot travel centers on I-84, I-88 and I-90 sell propane and often have dump stations.
  • Most state park campgrounds let non-guests refill fresh water for a small day-use fee. Ask at the entrance gate.

Important Information

  • Black bears live in the Catskills and Adirondacks. Store food in a hard-sided vehicle or bear box.
  • Deer are active at dawn and dusk in October–December. Drive slowly in forested areas.
  • Ticks carrying Lyme disease are common from April to November. Wear long sleeves and check skin daily.
  • Dial 911 for any emergency statewide. For wilderness issues you can also contact DEC Rangers at 518-408-5850.
  • Some towns ban street parking between 01:00 and 06:00 from November to April for snow removal.
  • New York enforces an open-container rule: no alcohol may be within reach of the driver or passengers.
