Car Rental Prices

How much does it cost to rent a car in Naples?

On average, car rentals in Naples cost around €86 per day, with the lowest-priced rentals available from €14 per day.

Saving Tips
  • Compare pickup spots: Airport pickup is easy but often adds about 15% in surcharges. If you’re staying in Naples first, pick up at the train station or city when you leave town.

  • Rent only for the days you drive: Use Naples public transport while in the city and avoid garage costs of €20-30 per day. If you must park, cheaper edge options like Brin Parking work well.

  • Go small and manual if you can: Compact cars are cheaper, easier on Amalfi’s narrow roads, and sip less fuel. Automatics cost 20-30% more, so reserve early only for summer.

  • Season-smart booking: For Jun-Sep, book 2-3 months ahead, especially automatics. In shoulder or low season, compare multiple dates and providers a few weeks out for deals.

  • Plan routes and parking to cut costs: Use the toll-free A3 where possible and avoid ZTL zones to dodge fines. For the Amalfi Coast, park in Sorrento and use ferries to skip pricey coastal parking.

  • Watch add-ons: Extra drivers usually cost €5-10 per day and under-25 surcharges apply. Compare limited vs unlimited kilometres and pick the one that fits your mileage.

Parking Tips

Understanding Naples' complex parking and traffic rules is essential.

  • Street Options: Very limited, mainly blue lines (pay and display)
  • Recommended Garages: Brin Parking on the outskirts
  • Rates vary; check posted prices at garages and meters
  • Strategy: Consider using Brin Parking at the edge of the center, then taxi or public transport into the historic areas

  • ZTL in the historic center (Centro Antico) around via dei Tribunali

  • Additional zones in parts of Chiaia and Bagnoli
  • Active at various times, often evenings
  • Camera enforcement and substantial fines
  • Avoid driving into any narrow alleys of central Naples

  • Naples driving style is notably aggressive compared to northern Italy

  • Lane markings often treated as suggestions
  • Scooters weave through traffic from all directions
  • Heavy horn usage (often as a signal of presence, not anger)
  • Keep windows up and doors locked in traffic (for security)

FAQs

Is it advisable to drive in Naples city center? We don't recommend that most visitors drive in the Naples city center. The traffic is chaotic, parking is very hard to find and many streets have zones where you can't drive. You're better off using public transport in the city and saving your rental car for trips outside Naples.

What are the alternatives to driving on the Amalfi Coast? In the busy season, you can use ferries that connect Naples, Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Salerno. You can also take the SITA bus, which goes to the coastal towns. A lot of people drive to Sorrento, park their car there and use boats or buses for day trips along the coast.

Are there any driving restrictions on the Amalfi Coast? Yes, during the peak summer season (around June to September), they often use an alternating license plate system on the Amalfi Coast road (SS163) for cars not owned by locals. This usually happens on weekends in June and September and daily in July and August, between 10 am and 6 pm. This system means cars with odd-numbered license plates can drive on certain days and even-numbered plates on others. You should check the current restrictions before you plan your trip.

How difficult is the drive from Naples to the Amalfi Coast? The drive has a few parts: city driving in Naples, highway driving on the A3 and then the tricky coastal road. The coastal section, especially from Sorrento to Positano and beyond, is narrow, winding and often congested. You'll need to be a confident driver and be very patient, particularly in the high season.

Is it worth renting a car just to visit Pompeii from Naples? If you're only going to Pompeii, public transport is a very good option. The Circumvesuviana train takes you directly from Naples to Pompeii Scavi station, which is right at the entrance to the ruins. A car is more useful if you want to visit several sites around Vesuvius or go on to other places.

What documents do I need to rent a car in Naples? You will need a valid driver's license, an international driving permit (if your license is from outside the EU), your passport and a credit card in your name for the security deposit.
