Car Rental Prices

How much does it cost to rent a car in Barcelona?

On average, car rentals in Barcelona cost around €52 per day, with the lowest-priced rentals available from €13 per day.

How to pay less?
  • Compare pickup spots. City center offices often beat the airport on price and avoid airport surcharges. Sants station is handy too, but can be busy.

  • Rent only for your road-trip days. Use Barcelona’s excellent public transport in the city, then pick up the car when you leave and drop it back when you return to avoid parking costs.

  • Time your booking to the season. For July–August and Easter, book months ahead. In winter and from mid-September onward, watch prices and grab a drop closer to your dates.

  • Tweak dates and times. Check weekly rates and keep pickup/drop within 24 hours to avoid being charged an extra day.

  • Pick a smaller car and skip extras. Compact cars are cheaper and easier to park in Barcelona. Use your phone for navigation and return the tank full.

  • Check one-way vs same-location return. One-way trips can carry a fee, so compare both options. Sometimes round-trip to the same office is cheaper.

FAQs

Is it worth having a car in Barcelona city? If you're just exploring Barcelona, we don't recommend getting a car because parking is hard to find, there's a lot of traffic and the public transport is great. You should only think about renting a car when you plan to leave the city.

What documents do I need to rent a car in Barcelona? You'll need a valid driver's license, a passport and a credit card in your name. You might also need an International Driving Permit if your license isn't from the EU/EEA or the UK, or if it's not in Spanish. Most car rental companies need you to be at least 21. If you're younger (between 21 and 24), they'll usually charge you an extra daily fee.

Where can I find free parking in Barcelona? It's hard to find free parking, but you can sometimes find it in areas near Zona Universitària, some spots around Diagonal Mar and on Sundays and public holidays when many blue zones are free. Always check the signs to be sure about the rules.

What are the speed limits in and around Barcelona? In built-up areas, the speed limit is 50 km/h (31 mph), but on many streets in Barcelona, it's been lowered to 30 km/h (19 mph). On regular two-lane roads, it's 90 km/h (56 mph) and on highways or freeways, it's 120 km/h (75 mph).

How do I handle parking tickets or traffic fines? If you get a fine, the authorities will send it to the car rental company. The company will then charge your card for the fine and add their own handling fee. If you get a fine on the spot, paying it quickly (in the first 20 days) can cut the cost by 50%.
