The UK offers numerous car rental locations, each offering different advantages depending on your travel plans.

Location Type Pros Cons
Airports
  • Immediate access upon arrival
  • Longer operating hours
  • Larger vehicle selection
  • Convenient for international travellers
  • Premium location surcharges (approximately 18% higher)
  • Can be busier and have longer wait times after multiple flight arrivals
City Centres
  • Generally lower base rates
  • Convenient if staying in the city
  • Avoid airport surcharges
  • Limited operating hours (especially Sundays)
  • Fewer vehicle options
  • Might require transportation from the airport
Train Stations
  • Convenient for rail travellers
  • Well-connected to other transport
  • May have location surcharges
  • Limited selection compared to airports

Major UK airports have rental car facilities either in the terminal or at nearby rental villages. Free shuttle services operate between them every 10-15 minutes.

City centre locations may require a short taxi or public transport journey from your accommodation. Some companies also offer hotel delivery for an additional fee.

Car Rental Prices

How much does it cost to rent a car in the United Kingdom?

On average, car rentals in the United Kingdom cost around €43 per day, with the lowest-priced rentals available from €15 per day.

How to pay less?
  • Compare pickup locations. Airports in the UK often add about 18% in surcharges. City-centre pickups are usually cheaper, just factor in the taxi or train to get there.

  • Time your booking by season. For UK summer and holiday periods, book 3-6 months ahead. In winter, prices are softer, so 2-4 weeks out often works.

  • Choose a smaller manual. Manual cars are common and usually 10-30% cheaper than automatics. Smaller cars also sip fuel and fit UK roads better.

  • Skip paid extras. Extra driver fees are ~£10/day, GPS ~£10/day, child seats £5-10/day. Keep to one driver, use your phone for nav, bring your own seat if possible.

  • Check weekly rates and timings. A 7-day rate can beat 5-6 daily rates. Adjust pickup/return to business hours to avoid after-hours fees (£20-50).

  • Watch local charges. One-way drop fees run £30-100, so compare with round-trip. In cities, use Park & Ride (Cambridge, Oxford, Bath, Edinburgh) and avoid London’s Congestion Charge and ULEZ by parking outside the zones. Also refuel at supermarket stations, not motorway services.

FAQs

What documents do I need to rent a car in the UK? You will need a valid driving licence, passport/ID and a credit card in the main driver's name. If you're visiting from another country, you'll need your home country's licence and maybe an International Driving Permit, depending on where your licence was issued.

Are there any age restrictions for renting a car? Most companies require you to be at least 21-23 years old. They often charge extra for drivers under 25. For some premium or larger cars, you might need to be 25 or 30.

What type of insurance is included in my rental? Your basic rental comes with a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection. These have an excess, which is usually between £1,000 and £1,300. You can lower this excess amount by buying extra cover from the rental company or another insurer.

Can I take my rental car to mainland Europe or Ireland? Most UK rental companies will let you drive to mainland Europe for an extra fee and you must tell them beforehand. You might need to buy extra insurance. Going to Ireland is often easier, but you still need to let the company know.

What happens if I return the car late? Most companies give you a grace period, usually between 29 and 59 minutes. After that, they will charge you for another full day. If you know you're going to be late, you should always call the rental company.

Is automatic transmission available? Yes, but manual cars are more common. You can get an automatic car, but there aren't many available and they usually cost 10-30% more. If you need an automatic, make sure you book it early.

How can I avoid congestion charges in London? You have to pay the London Congestion Charge to drive in central London from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and from 12pm to 6pm on weekends and bank holidays. You can pay online up to 90 days before you travel or up to three days after. You could also park outside the zone and take public transport.

What should I do if I get a ticket or fine while driving my rental? You should pay any fines quickly, so the rental company doesn't charge you extra administration fees. If you get a parking ticket, pay it by following the instructions on the ticket itself.
