Airport Rental Process:
On average, car rentals in Las Vegas cost around USD $54 per day, with the lowest-priced rentals available from USD $17 per day.
Compare pickup spots. LAS airport adds about 30% in taxes and fees, Strip hotels tack on 20–32% in hotel concessions, while off-Strip branches often end up 10–15% cheaper with roughly 20% tax. Factor in shuttle time and limited hours off-Strip.
Shift your dates. Sunday–Thursday is usually cheaper than weekends. For peak weeks like CES, spring break and major holidays, book earlier. Early Dec, late Jan and mid-Oct often have deals.
Pick the smallest car that fits. Economy/compact is enough for 1–2 people and easier Strip parking. Bigger cars and convertibles cost more without adding much for city driving.
Skip prepaid fuel. Petrol is cheaper off the Strip — look 1–2 miles east of Las Vegas Blvd. Driving to Death Valley? Fill up in Pahrump to avoid high park-area prices.
Limit rental days if you’re Strip-focused. Many resorts charge about $15/day for parking. Hire only for day trips and use the same casino chain to avoid paying twice.
Compare across sites. Check aggregators and direct websites, and test different pickup locations and vehicle classes to find the lowest total price.

Are there any toll roads in Las Vegas? Nevada currently has no toll roads. You can drive throughout the state without worrying about toll passes or fees.
Do I need an International Driving Permit? Nevada lets foreign visitors drive using a valid licence from their home country. The law doesn't require an International Driving Permit, but we recommend getting one if your licence isn't in English.
What insurance should I get for my hire car? If your credit card or travel insurance doesn't cover hire cars, you should consider a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) so you're not responsible for damage. Rental companies must include basic liability insurance by law, but it offers minimal cover (25/50/20 coverage). You can get extra protection with Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI).
What's the best way to avoid long lines at the airport rental centre? Join the rental company's free loyalty programme before your trip. Programs like Hertz Gold Plus, National Emerald Club or Avis Preferred often let you skip the counter. Also, try to avoid peak arrival times like Friday afternoons and Sunday returns.
How much should I budget for parking on the Las Vegas Strip? Most major hotels on the Strip charge about $18–25 per day for self-parking. If you're visiting multiple places, see if you can get your parking validated or use the monorail or rideshare between some locations to avoid multiple parking fees.
Can I drive to the Grand Canyon as a day trip? The South Rim is the main visitor area and it's 275 miles away. This makes for a long day trip, as the drive is 9-10 hours return trip. While you can do it, we recommend staying overnight. The closer West Rim, where the Skywalk is, is about 130 miles away and a much more manageable day trip. See our guide on making the drive to the Grand Canyon for more details.
What happens if I get a flat tyre or breakdown? You should contact your rental company's emergency number right away. If you bought their roadside assistance, they will help at no extra cost. Without it, you may have to pay for the service, unless the car had a mechanical problem that wasn't your fault.
Is it worth hiring a car if I'm just staying on the Strip? If you're only visiting places on the Strip and not going to other attractions, you might not need a hire car. The Strip is walkable (though it's long) and rideshare, taxis and the monorail connect most major hotels. A hire car is useful if you want to explore areas away from the Strip.
How strict is enforcement of the HOV lanes? The Nevada Highway Patrol enforces HOV lane rules during peak hours (5-10am and 2-7pm weekdays). The fine is over $250, so you should avoid using these lanes when driving alone during restricted hours.
