Car Rental Prices

How much does it cost to rent a car in Rapid City?

On average, car rentals in Rapid City cost around $109 per day, with the lowest-priced rentals starting at $55 per day.

Low-cost rental tips
  • Skip the airport markup. Downtown Rapid City pickups are often 20-40 % cheaper than RAP. Even after a $25 rideshare each way, multi-day rentals usually come out ahead.

  • Peak events = early booking, off-peak = keep checking. Lock in a car 3-6 months ahead for June-Aug or Sturgis week. Visiting Sept-May? Inventory is loose, so re-quote often and pounce when prices dip.

  • Test "weekly" rates. Weird but true: adding an extra day can drop the total cost. Always compare 5-, 6- and 7-day quotes before you click "pay".

  • Time your trip for shoulder season. April, late Aug (post-Rally) and October see economy cars under $40/day—about half the July price.

  • Go small to save big. Economy/compact cars rent for less, sip less fuel and fit the Black Hills' skinny tunnels. Pay less and skip the SUV headache unless you're visiting in deep winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive the scenic roads in the Black Hills with an RV or large vehicle?

Some scenic roads have size limits for vehicles. Needles Highway has tunnels as narrow as 8′4″ wide, and the three tunnels on Iron Mountain Road are about 10′9″ – 13′3″ high and roughly 11′–12′ wide. Most cars and SUVs can drive on these roads, but large RVs, campers or wide vehicles may not fit. We suggest you check your vehicle's exact size before you try driving these routes.

When is the best time to visit to avoid crowds but still have good weather?

For a good mix of pleasant weather, open attractions and fewer tourists, we recommend visiting from late May to early June or September to early October. All scenic roads are usually open and the temperatures are comfortable for outdoor activities.

Are there any roads I should avoid during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally?

During the first week of August, you should expect heavy motorcycle traffic throughout the Black Hills, especially on roads going to Deadwood, Sturgis and Mount Rushmore. If you're not comfortable driving near large groups of motorcycles, you may want to adjust your plans or travel times during this period.

Do I need a 4WD or AWD vehicle to explore the area?

If you visit in the summer and fall and stay on the main roads, any vehicle will be fine. If you travel in the winter or plan to explore unpaved Forest Service roads, an AWD/4WD vehicle will give you better grip and more peace of mind, especially in snowy or icy weather.

What should I do if I encounter wildlife on the road?

If you see bison or other wildlife on the road, especially in Custer State Park or the Badlands, stop a safe distance away and wait for the animals to move. Do not honk, get closer or try to drive around them. Bison can be dangerous if they feel threatened.
