On average, car rentals at Rapid City Airport cost around $109 per day, with the lowest-priced rentals starting at $55 per day.
Compare pickup spots: Airport booths add a ~10 % concession fee. Downtown Rapid City branches are often 20-40 % cheaper, even after a $25 rideshare each way if you keep the car 4+ days.
Peak vs shoulder season: For June–early August (and Sturgis Rally) prices skyrocket, so lock in 3–6 months ahead. Visit in April, May, Sep or Oct for good weather and daily rates that drop into the $40-70 zone.
Play with dates and durations: Mid-week pickups and weekly rates can beat 5-day bookings. Test a few start/return combos in the search box before you commit.
Check local independents: Small outfits a mile or two from RAP often undercut the majors. They'll shuttle you for free – just add that option to your comparison.
Skip pricey add-ons: Bring your own phone GPS and child seat to dodge $10-15 daily fees.
Book, then stalk the price: Most reservations are free to cancel. Re-quote every week; if the rate drops, rebook in two clicks and pocket the difference.

How far in advance should I book a rental car from RAP Airport?
If you're visiting in the summer (June–August), you should book 3–6 months ahead. For the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in early August, we recommend booking 6 or more months ahead. For spring or fall visits, booking 1–2 months ahead is usually enough. In winter, you can find cars easily so you don't need to book far in advance.
Are one-way rentals available from RAP to other destinations?
Yes, most major companies let you rent a car one-way to places like Sioux Falls, Denver or other major cities. They usually charge a one-way fee of about $100-$300. You might find it harder to get a one-way rental during the busy season.
Can I return my rental car outside of business hours?
Most companies at RAP let you return your car after hours using a key drop box. They will usually give you instructions when you pick up the car. If you return it after hours, you should take photos to show the car's condition.
Are there vehicle restrictions for scenic roads in the Black Hills?
Yes. Some roads have very narrow tunnels. Tunnels on Needles Highway are as narrow as 8'4" wide, and tunnels on Iron Mountain Road are about 13' high and 11' wide. Standard cars and SUVs can get through, but large RVs or wide vehicles may not fit. If you rent a large vehicle, you should ask the rental company about roads you might need to avoid.
Will my rental car be okay on the dirt roads in the area?
Most rental cars, even standard ones, are fine on maintained dirt or gravel roads like Sage Creek Rim Road in Badlands National Park. For rougher forest service roads, we recommend you get an SUV that sits higher off the ground. Most rental contracts do not let you drive "off-road" past maintained roads.
What should I do if wildlife is blocking the road in a park?
If you see bison or other wildlife on the road, especially in Custer State Park, you should stop a safe distance away and wait. Do not honk, get close or try to drive around them. Bison can be dangerous and damage your car if they feel threatened.
Do winter rentals come with special driving equipment?
Most rental cars at RAP come with all-season tires, not special snow tires. Rental companies usually don't provide snow chains and the rental agreement may not allow you to use them. If you are traveling in winter, you should ask for an AWD/4WD vehicle when you book. These cars handle better on snowy and icy roads.
