Car Rental Prices

How much does it cost to rent a car in South Lake Tahoe?

On average, car rentals in South Lake Tahoe cost around $58 per day, with the lowest-priced rentals starting at $41 per day.

How to save?
  • Compare pick-up spots: Local South Lake Tahoe offices avoid airport surcharges, while Reno Airport offers bigger fleets; run both options through the search to see which mix of price, hours and drive time works.

  • Target the shoulder months (Apr–May, Sep–Nov) when rates dip and availability surges—often the cheapest time to lock in a car.

  • Skip 4WD in dry months and filter for standard sedans to avoid the extra $20-30 a day winter-ready vehicles cost.

  • Check weekly pricing even for 4–5-day trips; a flat 7-day rate can beat stacking single days, especially on SUVs during ski season.

  • Fill up in Carson City or Placerville before heading up the mountain—fuel around the lake is noticeably pricier.

FAQs

Do I need a 4WD/AWD vehicle in South Lake Tahoe?
In the winter months (November–April), we highly recommend a 4WD/AWD vehicle. Officials can require one when they put chain controls in effect. Under California's R2 chain control level, if you drive a 4WD/AWD vehicle with snow-rated tires, you usually don't have to install chains. You are still required to carry chains in the car. In summer, any type of car is fine unless you plan to drive on unpaved U.S. Forest Service roads.

What are the chain control requirements for rental cars?
Many major rental companies don't allow you to put tire chains on their cars and will not cover damage the chains cause. If the company allows chains, you are responsible for any resulting damage. People driving 4WD/AWD vehicles that have snow tires usually don't have to install chains (but they must carry them). So, renting one of these vehicles is the most practical way to follow chain control orders during winter visits.

What's the best way to handle the drive from Reno Airport to South Lake Tahoe?
You should check weather forecasts and road conditions before you leave. The drive from Reno–Tahoe International Airport takes about 75 minutes in good weather but can stretch to 2–3 hours during storms. Most people take I-580/US-395 south to US-50 west over Spooner Summit. This is a mountain pass that officials may close or require you to use chains on during heavy snow. If you arrive during a bad storm, consider staying overnight in Reno and driving to Tahoe when conditions improve.

Is it possible to drive around the entire lake in one day?
Yes. It takes about 3 hours to drive the 72-mile (116 km) loop around Lake Tahoe without stopping. You should plan on a full day to enjoy scenic viewpoints, beaches and attractions. Popular stops include Emerald Bay, Sand Harbor and Tahoe City. Summer weekends have heavy traffic that can make the drive much longer.

What should I keep in my rental car during winter visits?
You should carry extra warm clothing, water, snacks, a flashlight and a fully charged phone. Keep the fuel tank at least half full. Although rental companies keep their cars in good shape, mountain conditions can be unpredictable. Let someone know your travel plans if you will be driving during storms or at night.

How do parking regulations change during snow events?
The city of South Lake Tahoe enforces strict parking rules during its snow removal operations. Officials usually prohibit street parking until the plows are finished. Hotels and vacation rentals generally provide off-street parking for their guests. The city may ticket or tow illegally parked cars at the owner's expense.
