Do I need a 4WD/AWD vehicle in South Lake Tahoe?
In the winter months (November–April), we highly recommend a 4WD/AWD vehicle. Officials can require one when they put chain controls in effect. Under California's R2 chain control level, if you drive a 4WD/AWD vehicle with snow-rated tires, you usually don't have to install chains. You are still required to carry chains in the car. In summer, any type of car is fine unless you plan to drive on unpaved U.S. Forest Service roads.
What are the chain control requirements for rental cars?
Many major rental companies don't allow you to put tire chains on their cars and will not cover damage the chains cause. If the company allows chains, you are responsible for any resulting damage. People driving 4WD/AWD vehicles that have snow tires usually don't have to install chains (but they must carry them). What's the best way to handle the drive from Reno Airport to South Lake Tahoe?
You should check weather forecasts and road conditions before you leave. The drive from Reno–Tahoe International Airport takes about 75 minutes in good weather but can stretch to 2–3 hours during storms. Most people take I-580/US-395 south to US-50 west over Spooner Summit. This is a mountain pass that officials may close or require you to use chains on during heavy snow. If you arrive during a bad storm, consider staying overnight in Reno and driving to Tahoe when conditions improve.
