Driving Information
- The speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on main roads and 50 km/h in towns unless signs show different limits.
- Belgium has no motorway tolls for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, but the Liefkenshoek Tunnel near Antwerp charges a fee.
- Low-Emission Zones (LEZ) operate in Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. Check your vehicle's engine class online and register before entering these zones. Fines start at €150.
- Round blue signs with white numbers show the minimum speed on some motorways.
- Petrol stations accept cards, but many automated pumps require a card with PIN and chip technology.
- The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/L.
- Use headlights or daytime running lights at all times for better visibility during frequent rain.

Refuelling and Services
- Large motorway service areas such as E40 – Nazareth and E19 – Heverlee have 24-hour fuel, drinking water taps and waste dump points.
- Carrefour and Colruyt supermarkets on city edges offer cheaper diesel and LPG. Some have coin-operated fresh-water fills.
- Most municipal motorhome service areas provide combined stations for cassette toilets, grey water disposal and fresh water refill for €2–€3.
Practical Tips
- Expect rain throughout the year. Pack cables and mats for muddy camping pitches, especially in March and November.
- Wild camping is not allowed. Overnight parking on public streets is only permitted where signs show a white campervan symbol.
- The emergency number is 112 for police, fire and ambulance services.
- You must carry a warning triangle and reflective vest for each adult. Fines apply if these items are missing.
- Languages: road signs appear in Dutch (northern Flanders region), French (southern Wallonia region) or both languages. Major tourist sites also display information in English.
- Rivers may freeze lightly in January, so refill water tanks during warmer daytime hours to prevent cracked pipes.
