Driving Tips
- On most motorways the speed limit is 120–130 km/h. On rural roads it is 90 km/h unless signs show different limits.
- Buy a vignette before entering toll-sticker countries such as Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia. Cameras check your windscreen.
- France, Germany, Italy and other countries have Low Emission Zones (LEZ). Order the required sticker or day pass online to avoid fines.
- Many city centres have streets narrower than 2.3 metres. Use park-and-ride lots and public transport instead.
- Expect many roundabouts. Vehicles already inside the roundabout have priority.
- Carry two warning triangles, reflective vests for all occupants and a first-aid kit. Police may check these items during roadside stops.
- The emergency number across the EU is 112. It works from any mobile phone.

Resupplying Options
- Motorway service areas across Europe offer 24-hour diesel, LPG and often a drive-through dump station.
- Most aires and stellplätze have a borne de service: clean water, cassette toilet dump and grey-water drain for €3–€5.
- Large supermarkets (Carrefour, Lidl, Rewe) sell camping gas bottles and allow short-term parking to buy groceries.
Local Tips
- Winter tyres are mandatory in Alpine regions from 15 Nov–15 Apr. Carry snow chains when crossing mountain passes above 1000 metres.
- Night-time street camping is banned in parts of Portugal, Croatia and Spain between 22:00 and 06:00. Sleep in official sites to avoid fines.
- Many bridges and tunnels use electronic toll tags (e.g. Telepass, Liber-t). Visitors can pay at mixed cash/card lanes but keep right to avoid the tag-only gate.
- Bring a CEE blue 16A adaptor. This is the standard plug for campsite power around Europe.
- Fuel names vary: unleaded petrol is "E5" or "95", diesel is "B7". Check the pump label before filling to avoid misfuelling fees.
- Dial 112 for police, medical or fire anywhere in the EU. Operators answer in multiple languages.
