Driving Tips
- Autostrade are toll motorways. Take a ticket at the entrance and pay at exit, or use the electronic Telepass lane if your rental includes a device.
- The speed limits are 130 km/h (81 mph) on motorways, 90 km/h (56 mph) on secondary roads and 50 km/h (31 mph) in towns unless signs show otherwise.
- Many city centres have ZTL (limited traffic zones). Entering without a permit creates an automatic fine that is sent to the rental company.
- From 15 November to 15 April several northern regions require winter tyres or snow chains. Police can fine drivers or turn them back at mountain passes.
- Fuel names: "Diesel" or "Gasolio" for diesel, "Benzina" for petrol, "GPL" for LPG. Most campervans use diesel.
- Service stations on motorways operate 24 hours and often allow short overnight parking.
- In villages, blue lines mean paid parking, white lines are free, yellow lines are restricted.
- Maximum camper height for most city car parks is 2.1 metres (6 feet 11 inches); look for open-air lots instead.

- Wild camping is illegal nationwide unless the local council allows it; fines vary by region.

- Coastal areas near popular destinations enforce overnight street-parking bans from midnight to 6:00 AM in high season.
