Road Genius compares campervan and motorhome rentals in Italy, letting you view prices and vehicle layouts from several suppliers in one place. Sardinia is reachable by ferry from mainland ports like Livorno, Civitavecchia and Genoa, or by air into Cagliari, Olbia and Alghero. A loop of the island is roughly 600 mi / 970 km, so most travellers focus on one coast per trip.

Driving in the Area

  • Historic Venice does not allow vehicles; plan to park in Mestre, Marghera, Tronchetto or Fusina and continue by public transport.
  • Many nearby towns have a ZTL (limited-traffic zone). Cameras record violations and fines arrive by mail.
  • Highway speed limits are 130 km/h, main roads 90 km/h, city areas 50 km/h.
  • The A4 and A27 highways use toll stations; you can pay by card, cash or the electronic Telepass lane (rental companies may offer a device).
  • Venice lagoon bridges and Tronchetto parking allow vehicles up to 4 m high.
  • Chains or winter tyres are required on mountain routes in Veneto between 15 Nov and 15 Apr.
  • GPL (LPG) is available but not at every petrol station; check for the "GPL" sign before entering.

Practical Tips

  • Acqua alta (high tide) floods parts of Venice mainly Oct – Dec; ferries continue running but bring waterproof boots if you visit the islands.
  • Summer humidity brings many mosquitoes; pack window nets and repellent.
  • Keep your ticket after paying highway tolls; you need it to exit if there is a problem.
  • The general emergency number in Italy is 112.
  • Venice tourist police issue fines for street parking between 00:00 and 06:00 in Mestre if you sleep inside the vehicle.
  • Carry reflective vests and warning triangles; Italian law requires them for every person when stopping on the roadside.
