Driving Notes

  • You need a green emissions sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter the low-emission zone inside the Mittlerer Ring.
  • Many Autobahn sections near Munich have a 130 km/h (80 mph) recommended speed limit. Watch for posted limits of 120 km/h or lower.
  • Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes must keep to the right lane and may have lower speed limits.
  • Most city car parks have a 2 m (6 ft 7 in) height limit. Use Park-and-Ride lots such as Fröttmaning for tall vehicles.
  • Germany has no tolls for light vehicles, but Austria's A8 highway requires a "Vignette" sticker if you cross the border.
  • Winter tyres are required in snow and ice conditions. Carry snow chains for Alpine mountain passes.
  • LPG (Autogas) is widely available. Petrol stations use the German bayonet connector, so bring an adapter if your tank uses a different system.
  • Overnight street parking for campers is restricted. Many areas ban vehicles over 2.8 m or parking between 22:00–06:00.
