Driving in South Africa
- National roads (marked "N") are sealed and allow 120 km/h (75 mph) unless posted lower.
- Secondary "R" roads often drop to 100 km/h (62 mph) and can have potholes, livestock and speed bumps.
- Wildlife, especially antelope, is most active near dawn and dusk. Slow down in game reserve areas.
- Roadside fuel stations are frequent but fill up before long stretches on the N1 and N14 through the Karoo and Kalahari.
- Gauteng's electronic e-toll system charges automatically. Rental companies add the fees to your bill.
- Legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%. Police run routine breath checks at night.
- Keep cash or a bank card ready for toll plazas on the N1, N3, N4 and N17.
- A local barbecue is called a braai. Many camps supply fixed braai stands, so carry charcoal or wood.

- Engen 1-Stop and Shell Ultra City plazas on the N1, N2 and N3 supply diesel, LPG canisters, fresh water taps and coin-operated showers.
- Fresh-water and dump stations are available inside many SANParks rest camps. Kruger, Addo and Augrabies have the most reliable facilities.
- Large malls on the outskirts of Cape Town (Canal Walk), Johannesburg (Fourways) and Durban (Gateway) have 24-hour service stations with secure parking for vehicles up to 23 ft / 7 m.
Practical Tips
- South Africa has scheduled power cuts called load-shedding. Carry a torch and charge devices while driving.
- Malaria exists in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and northern KwaZulu-Natal from September to May. Use repellents and sleep under nets.
- Fire bans apply in summer in the Western Cape. Use braai only in marked concrete pits.
- Avoid roadside parking after 6:00 PM. Choose inside a fenced campsite or a fuel plaza with security guards.
- National emergency numbers: 10111 (police) and 112 from any mobile network.
- Carry a good spare tyre, jack and compressor. Assistance can be over 60 mi / 100 km away in remote areas.
