Japan Tourism Statistics – Economic Impact
The World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 2023 Economic Impact Research (EIR) highlighted Japan’s travel and tourism sector rebound, growing by 17.4% to $257.3 billion, which represented 6.2% of the nation’s total economic output.
- Despite the strong recovery, the sector’s economic contribution was still 16.1% below the levels seen in 2019.
- The sector also boosted employment, with nearly 5.09 million jobs, reflecting a 21.7% year-on-year increase and matching the employment levels of 2019.
Overtourism in Japan
- Japan has also faced overtourism in recent years, with popular destinations like Kyoto, Mount Fuji, and Tokyo being overwhelmed by large numbers of tourists. Million of tourists in Kyoto has led to congestion at temples and historical sites, while locals in popular areas have expressed concerns about overcrowding and the disruption of daily life.

Most Visited Cities in Japan
- Tokyo is the most visited city in Japan with a visit rate of 51.5% (about 12.9 million tourists) due to its status as the capital city and a major cultural, economic, and political hub.
- The second most visited city is Osaka with a 39.6% visit rate (estimated at 9.9 million tourists), known for its modern architecture, nightlife, and hearty street food.
- Close to Tokyo, Chiba Prefecture has a visit rate of 36.6% (9.2 million tourists), influenced by attractions like Tokyo Disneyland.
- With a visit rate of 29.5% (7.4 million visitors), Kyoto is well-known for its classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines, and traditional wooden houses.
- Fukuoka Prefecture holds a 11.2% visit rate (2.8 million tourists). Located on the northern shore of Japan’s Kyushu Island, it’s known for its ancient temples, beaches, and modern shopping malls.
