Driving Notes

  • You need a green emissions sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter the low-emission zone inside the Mittlerer Ring.
  • Many Autobahn sections near Munich have a 130 km/h (80 mph) recommended speed limit. Watch for posted limits of 120 km/h or lower.
  • RVs over 3.5 tons must keep to the right lane and may have lower speed limits.
  • Most city car parks have a 2 m (6 ft 7 in) height limit. Use Park-and-Ride lots such as Fröttmaning for tall vehicles.
  • Germany has no tolls for light vehicles, but Austria's A8 highway requires a "Vignette" sticker if you cross the border.
  • Winter tires are required in snow and ice conditions. Carry snow chains for Alpine mountain passes.
  • LPG (Autogas) is widely available. Gas stations use the German bayonet connector, so bring an adapter if your tank uses a different system.
  • Overnight street parking for campers is restricted. Many areas ban vehicles over 2.8 m or parking between 22:00–06:00.

  • Camping München-Thalkirchen sells LPG gas bottles and lets travelers empty gray and black water for a small fee.

Did You Know?

  • Oktoberfest (mid-Sep to early Oct) doubles traffic. Expect road closures and book campsites months ahead.
  • Bavaria enforces quiet hours 22:00–07:00. Generators or loud music can result in a fine.
  • Call 112 for police, fire or ambulance anywhere in Germany.
  • Winter fog and black ice often form along the Isar River before sunrise. Drive slowly and use fog lights.
  • Police may check passports and vehicle registration at campsite check-in. Have documents ready.
  • In heat waves the city may issue Grillverbot (barbecue ban) in parks and campgrounds due to fire risk.
