Driving Information

  • 120 km/h (75 mph) is the motorway speed limit, 90 km/h (56 mph) on main roads and 50 km/h (31 mph) in towns unless signs show otherwise.
  • Most motorways use the Via Verde electronic toll system. Rental companies can provide a transponder or you can pre-pay at a post office.
  • The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%. Police conduct random roadside tests.
  • Use dipped headlights in tunnels and when visibility drops below 50 meters (164 feet).
  • Coastal and mountain villages often have streets narrower than 2.3 meters (7 feet 6 inches). Plan to park at the village edge and walk in.
  • Many fuel stations sell GPL/LPG. Check roof height at older urban stations.

Refueling Information

  • Galp, BP and Repsol service areas on the A1, A2 and A22 motorways have high canopies, LPG and 24-hour card payment.
  • Intermarché and Continente Hyper stores often provide free drinking water and paid dump points beside the fuel pumps.
  • Municipal ASAs list their water and waste fees on site (usually €2–4). Carry coins for the machines.

Local Tips

  • Dial 112 for all emergencies. Operators speak English.
  • Strong Atlantic winds can exceed 60 km/h (37 mph). Retract awnings and face the van into the wind.
  • Lisbon and Porto low-emission zones block pre-2000 diesel vehicles from 07:00–21:00. Use ring roads if you are unsure about your vehicle.
  • Overnight parking is forbidden within 500 meters (1,640 feet) of the coast and in all protected natural parks.
  • Summer wildfire risk is high. Check the civil protection map (prociv.pt) before driving on rural roads.
  • Pharmacies display a green cross and can provide minor medical help outside hospital hours.
