Driving in the Area

  • Speed limits are 120 km/h (75 mph) on motorways, 90 km/h (56 mph) on main roads and 50 km/h (31 mph) in towns.
  • The A22 motorway (Via do Infante) uses electronic tolls. Most rental companies provide a toll device. If not provided, register your vehicle number plate at a post office or Easytoll machine before using toll roads.
  • Roundabouts are common. Vehicles already in the circle have priority.
  • You can find unleaded petrol and diesel along the N125 road and at most supermarkets. LPG (called GPL in Portuguese) is available at larger Galp and Repsol fuel stations.
  • Old town streets in Faro are narrow. Vehicles over 6.5 m (21 ft) should park outside the center and walk or use public buses.
  • Speed cameras operate on both the A22 and N125 roads. Fines are sent by mail to your home address.

  • Galp, Repsol and Prio fuel stations on the N125 road offer fuel, drinking water taps and paid toilet cassette disposal.
  • Algarve RV Park locations sell fresh water and waste disposal tokens to non-guests during office hours.
  • Faro Ecocentro (waste center) near Parque das Cidades provides free gray and black water disposal Monday–Friday 08:00–17:00.

Practical Tips

  • July and August bring high UV levels and daytime temperatures above 30 °C (86 °F). Carry extra drinking water and use window shades.
  • Strong Atlantic winds can blow sand across coastal roads. Reduce speed when visibility is poor.
  • Wildfire risk is highest from June to September. Check fogos.pt website before driving in inland hills.
  • Overnight street parking in Faro city is banned between 02:00 and 07:00 in marked zones.
  • Dial 112 for all emergencies. Operators speak English.
  • Pharmacies show a green cross sign and can provide minor medical help without appointment.
