Driving Tips

  • Urban speed limit 50 km/h (31 mph), rural roads 90 km/h (56 mph), motorways 120 km/h (75 mph). Fines are high.
  • Many motorways use electronic tolls (portagens electrónicas). A rental with a Via Verde transponder pays automatically. Without it, you must pay at a CTT post office within five days.
  • Alcohol limit is 0.05%. Police conduct roadside breath tests.
  • Streets in the historic center are narrow and steep. Park outside and use metro or bus.
  • Roundabout rule: traffic already inside has priority. Signal before you exit.
  • Overnight street parking is not allowed in central Porto between 00:00 and 07:00. Use official RV areas.

Refueling in the Area

  • Large Galp station on A1 south of Arrábida Bridge has high canopies for large vehicles. Offers diesel, gasoline and LPG.
  • Repsol Matosinhos (EN12) has 24-hour GPL (LPG) and separate water fill for motorhomes.
  • Dump point and fresh water at the Parque da Cidade motorhome area. Bring €2 coins for the machine.

Practical Tips

  • Rain is common from November to March. Carry leveling boards and avoid low, muddy pitches.
  • Wildfires happen inland from June to September. Open flames and BBQs are banned on high-risk days.
  • Wild camping outside approved areas is illegal and can result in fines up to €250.
  • Keep a reflective vest and warning triangle inside the vehicle. You must wear the vest if you step onto the road.
  • Emergency number for police, fire and ambulance is 112.
