Driving in the Area

  • Many motorways use electronic toll collection called Via Verde. International visitors can pay with a rental transponder or pay within 5 days at post offices or Payshop locations.
  • Speed limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on rural roads and 50 km/h in towns.
  • The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/L. Police conduct roadside checks.
  • Lisbon city centre has narrow streets and low clearances. Avoid entering Alfama, Bairro Alto and Baixa areas with vehicles over 6 m.
  • Parking zones require payment Mon–Fri 08:00–20:00 (some areas until 01:00). Waterfront areas ban overnight street parking 00:00–07:00.
  • The 25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama bridges charge tolls when leaving Lisbon.
  • A Low Emission Zone is planned. Check road signs before entering.

Refuelling in the Area

  • Large Galp and Repsol fuel stations on the A2 and IC19 roads offer diesel, petrol and LPG plus drinking water taps.
  • Lisboa Camping has a paid service area for fresh water and grey/black-water disposal.
  • The public motorhome service point under the Alcântara railway line (coordinates N38.702, W9.179) provides water and waste disposal for a small fee.

Did You Know?

  • Overnight stays outside authorised areas are illegal inside coastal protected zones. Fines are €250–€600.
  • Wild-fire risk is high from July to September. Parking or cooking in forests may be banned on high-risk days (orange or red weather alert).
  • The Atlantic Ocean brings winter winds above 60 km/h. Avoid cliff-top parking during storms.
  • Many beach parking areas have height barriers set at 2.2 m.
  • Toll violations not paid within 5 days result in additional charges and fees.
  • Dial 112 for all emergencies. Operators speak Portuguese and English.
