Important Tips for International Travelers

  • Summer temperatures can exceed 35°C (95°F). Carry extra engine coolant and park in shade when possible.
  • Wild camping is not allowed in France. Stay at official camping areas or private land with permission.
  • Beaujolais harvest in late September brings slow farm vehicles on smaller roads. Drive carefully.
  • Dial 112 for all emergencies. Fire brigade is 18, police 17.
  • Winter can bring thick fog in the Rhône valley. Use low beam headlights and reduce speed.
  • Many fuel pumps are automatic and require a chip-and-PIN credit card. Keep at least ¼ tank before traveling to rural areas.
