Driving Notes

  • Urban speed limits are 50 km/h (31 mph) unless a sign shows lower. Rural roads allow 90 km/h (56 mph) and motorways 110–120 km/h (68–75 mph).

  • Keep low-beam headlights on at all times. This is required by Swedish law.

  • The Öresund Bridge charges a toll. Number plates are scanned automatically and you pay at the booth or online within 48 hours.

  • Winter tyres are required 1 December–31 March when winter conditions exist.

  • Sweden's legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.02%. Police conduct random breath tests.

  • Many streets in central Malmö have height-restricted car parks. Open-air parking spots fill early.

  • Free overnight parking on public land is not allowed for motorised vehicles. Use marked ställplats (RV areas) or campgrounds.
  • Fixed speed cameras are common on the E6 and E22 highways. Fines are posted to the rental company.

  • LPG and diesel at Shell TruckStop Malmö (E6 exit 15) with 24 hour card pumps and fresh-water tap.
  • Public service bay at First Camp Sibbarp sells fresh water fill and waste dump for day visitors (small fee).
  • ICA Maxi Hypermarket (Stora Bernstorp) has 3.4 m roof clearance and stocks camping gas canisters.

Did You Know?

  • Strong crosswinds can require speed reductions on the Öresund Bridge. Follow the variable speed signs.

  • Summer brings mosquitoes and ticks in coastal forests. Carry repellent and check skin after hikes.

  • Sweden uses emergency number 112 for police, fire and ambulance.

  • Non-urgent medical advice in English is available 24 hours via 1177 (phone or website).

  • Many car parks in Malmö switch to residential permit only between 00:00 and 06:00. Signs read "Boendeparkering".

  • Cash is rarely accepted. Tolls, fuel and campgrounds prefer card payment or the mobile app "Swish".
