Road Genius compares campervan rentals across multiple suppliers so you can choose the best vehicle for Croatia. Split Airport (SPU) and the nearby ferry port are common entry points to explore the Dalmatian Coast, the islands and the A1 motorway north toward Plitvice Lakes. Summer crowds and ferry schedules affect most travel plans, so book campsites early for July–August.

Driving Notes

  • The A1 motorway from Zagreb to Split has tolls. You take a ticket at the on-ramp and pay with cash or card at the exit. The ENC electronic tag gives a small discount and faster lanes.

  • Coastal road D8 has beautiful views but is slow. Expect traffic jams near Split and Omiš, especially after 15:00 in July and August.

  • Most central Split streets are narrow. Overnight parking for campervans is not allowed in Zone 1 between 22:00–06:00.

  • Speed limits: 130 km/h on motorways, 90 km/h on main roads, 50 km/h in towns.

  • Legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.05% BAC. For drivers under 24 years old it is zero.

  • Ferries to Brač, Hvar and Vis leave from Split. Arrive 60 minutes before departure to secure a van space in summer.

Important Information

  • Open flames are banned in campsites and forests from 1 June–30 September due to wildfire risk.

  • From 15 November–15 April mountain sections of the A1 may require winter tyres or chains, even if coastal roads stay mild.

  • Croatia uses the euro currency. Tolls, fuel and ferries show prices in €.

  • Emergency number 112 connects police, fire and medical services and accepts English calls.

  • Each vehicle must carry a reflective vest and warning triangle. Police can give fines immediately if these are missing.
