Okinawa Naha Airport (OKA) Statistics

Domestic flights carried 18.21 million passengers and international flights carried 2.95 million passengers at OKA in 2024.

• From 2014 to 2018, domestic traffic grew from 15.85 million to 17.54 million, while international traffic rose from 1.44 million to 3.84 million.
• The pre-pandemic year 2019 brought 18.08 million domestic passengers and 3.68 million international passengers.
• International traffic dropped to 424,572 passengers in 2020 and 3,427 passengers in 2021, while domestic traffic fell to 8.79 million and 7.41 million.
• By 2024, domestic passengers accounted for 86% of total traffic, while international passengers accounted for 14%.

Domestic flights accounted for a calculated 141,034 operations and international flights for 17,788 operations at OKA in 2024.

• From 2014 to 2018, calculated international operations rose from 12,998 to 25,000, while domestic operations moved from 140,976 to 138,606.
• The pre-pandemic year 2019 recorded 136,854 calculated domestic operations and 24,758 calculated international operations.
• International operations fell to 3,820 in 2020 and 320 in 2021 during the border-restriction period.
• By 2024, domestic operations represented 88.8% of calculated total operations, while international operations represented 11.2%.

August was OKA’s busiest month in 2024, with 2.09 million total passengers.

• January was the lowest month of 2024, with 1.47 million total passengers.
• Spring traffic reached 1.84 million passengers in March before easing to 1.63 million in both May and June.
• Summer demand peaked at 1.9 million passengers in July and 2.09 million in August.
• October was the second-busiest month of the year, with 1.96 million total passengers.

Naha Airport Building Co., Ltd. (NABCO) reported ¥2.09 billion in completed major facility investments for the fiscal year ended 31 March 2025.

• MLIT opened Naha Airport’s second runway on 26 March 2020, increasing runway processing capacity from 135,000 to 240,000 operations per year.
• The second runway project had an official total project cost of about ¥207.4 billion.
• FY2025 completed projects included the domestic specified ceiling repair, the first phase of domestic air-conditioning renewal and international security equipment with smart lanes.
• Projects still in progress at fiscal year-end included a capsule hotel, a south-side multistory parking facility, a domestic lounge relocation and expansion, and further domestic air-conditioning renewal work.

• On 20 August 2007, China Airlines Flight 120, a Boeing 737-800, caught fire after landing at Naha Airport.
• The aircraft had 165 people on board, and all evacuated with no deaths or injuries.
• On 5 July 2012, a China Eastern Airlines Airbus A319-112 entered Runway 18 while an AirAsia Japan Airbus A320-214 was approaching.
• On 14 June 2018, Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-15J aircraft were involved in a runway-incursion serious incident with a Ryukyu Air Commuter Bombardier DHC-8-402 at Naha Airport.
