In 2017, the Golden State welcomed 17.6 million international visitors. Approximately, 17.4 million visitors were welcomed in 2019, but the record was set in 2018 with 18.2 million visitors.¹

However, like other states, California experienced a sharp decline in tourist numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hitting lows of 3.7 million in 2020 and 5.2 million in 2021.

In 2022, the visitor count of California made a remarkable turnaround, with over 11.5 million. Following this trend, California received 14.99 million visitors in 2023.

In 2023, international tourists visiting California spent about $22.55 billion.

Visitor spending increased from $27.1 billion in 2017 to $28 billion in both 2018 and 2019.

The years 2020 and 2021 saw a downturn in spending due to reduced international tourism, with expenditures falling to $5.3 billion and $5.4 billion, respectively.

By 2022, spending rebounded to approximately $17 billion but is yet to reach pre-pandemic levels.

Tourist spending followed a similar trend. After maintaining around $28 billion in 2018 and 2019, expenditure dropped by 81% to $5.3 billion in 2020. In 2021, spending slightly increased to $5.4 billion.

Domestic visitation, which was at 263 million in 2018, also dropped in 2020 to 136.90 million but rebounded to 248.90 million in 2023.

Total visitor numbers, combining international and domestic, followed a similar trend, with a decrease to 140.64 million in 2020 and a recovery to 263.89 million in 2023.
