In 2024, over 2.35 million international and domestic tourists visited Maui.¹

• Maui attracted 450,107 international visitors in 2019. However, when the pandemic hit in 2020, this number dropped by 78% to 99,404.

• By 2021, international tourism in Maui decreased further, reaching 41,805 visitors. Tourist numbers rose in 2022 with 248,449 international visitors.

• In 2023, international tourism in Maui continued to increase, totalling 271,564. However, this was still 40% less than in 2019 (pre-pandemic).

• International tourist volume decreased to 214,787 in 2024, a 20.9% decrease from the previous year.

How many tourists visited Maui in 2025? 

• Maui has received 1.89 million tourists from January to September 2025. This represents an 8.6% increase from the same period of previous year.

• The USA was the top source of visitors to Maui, accounting for 86% of the market share with a total of 2.03 million visits. Canada also contributed 216,895 tourists.

• Europe accounted for over 1% of market share with 30,461 visits. 

• Japan and Korea made 14,070 and 7,304 visits, respectively.

What is the economic impact of the Maui wildfire on businesses and tourism?

• The Maui wildfire caused a $2.7 million loss in business revenue, impacting over 800 businesses and 7,000 employees, with estimated total losses of $11 million per day from business closures and reduced visitor spending.
  
  
• Air travel declined with 88 transpacific flight cancellations in August, reducing daily arrivals at Kahului Airport from 7,000 to 2,000, a decrease of over 70%.
  
  
• Monthly rental income losses were estimated at $2 million due to destroyed renter-occupied homes in Lahaina, and weekly unemployment claims increased from 130 to over 4,400 in the weeks following the wildfire.

When is the best time to visit Maui?

The best time to visit Maui is generally from April to May and from September to November, when the weather is pleasant, the island is less crowded, and prices for accommodations and activities are lower compared to peak tourist seasons.

• Spring (April–May): Offers warm, comfortable weather and fewer visitors, making it ideal for exploring beaches, waterfalls, and hiking trails.

• Fall (September–November): Brings mild temperatures and calmer conditions, perfect for snorkeling, scenic drives, and enjoying the island’s natural beauty without the summer crowds.

• Summer (June–August): Features sunny days and warm ocean waters, great for swimming and water sports, but it’s also the busiest and most expensive season.

• In 2024, the primary reason visitors came to Maui was for vacation or pleasure, accounting for 84% of all visitors. 

• Other reasons for visiting included meeting friends and relatives (6%), attending meetings and conventions (4%), and business-related travel (2%). 

• The remaining 4% of visitors came for various other purposes.

In 2024, domestic travellers in Maui accounted for 2.14 million tourists, making up 91% of the total visitors, while international tourists amounted to 214,787. 

• In 2019, Maui welcomed a combined total of 3.06 million international and domestic tourists. 

• However, when the pandemic struck in 2020, visitor numbers dropped significantly to 792,602.

• In 2021, Maui received a total of 2.30 million tourists, despite the emergence of a new COVID variant. Domestic tourism rebounded with 2.26 million visitors, while international tourism remained low, with only 41,805 tourists.

• 2022 marked the recovery year for Maui, with 2.92 million tourists. However, due to wildfires, Maui received 2.48 million visitors in 2023.
